Looking at the website for the 19th Barking there seems no comments about the early days, my days. When Skip Jim Overy run the Troop and his dad, Mr Overy ran the Cubs. They gave up the posts and George Gardner took over.. under his leadership, and it was true leadership, we were the best. Not just because we could boast of more Queen's Scouts than any other troop but we have a tremendous sense of unity... we set ourselves many challenges and somehow always pulled them off.
There must be some connections remaining with the old boys of the 1950 ~ 1960 era?
I was associated with the 19th from aged 11 until about 27 years, when circumstances phased me out of taking an active role.

I lived in South Ockendon and went to school at Dagenham County High but somehow managed the journey by bike or occasionally train to attend Wednesday (Cubs)/(Ventures) and Friday (Scouts).

I would say everyone else lived within stones throw of Campbell Infants School, I was jealous but always felt part of the area, having been spent the first 11 years of my life in Seaton Gardens. After which I was moved to South Ockendon.

There must be scores of local ex 19th able to fill you in on the glorious past?

Great days but I am sure the new generation are enjoying them selves just as much, no matter how much H&SE restrict the kind of activity we got up to!

Best wishes

Don Stoddart
